Upon the birth of my daughter in 2005, I took time out (from designing womenswear) to simply enjoy being a mother, not realizing this very act would blossom into the birth of a brand too. I discovered that little girls love to lose themselves in make-believe worlds and, more than anything, cherish beautiful tutus. When my daughter asked me for one, I embarked on a quest to find something that was not mass-produced, hot pink and polyester. After failing to find anything, it was clear there was a gap in the market for tutus made from natural materials, cottons and silks. Tutus in beautiful soft tones, preferably with beading, reminiscent of a vintage garment, delicately hand-made like couture and inspired by French ballet costumes. Tutu du Monde was born.

 

All of our garments are hand crafted and hand-dyed with an old-world feel but without the frail nature of a vintage garment. They are a world apart from the mass-produced, cheap polyester numbers that flood the shops. Imagine dusty pastels, silk ribbons, sparkly sequins, crystal beads and wisps of delicate feathers, applied by hand to the softest cotton and the finest tulle and silk organza. They are made to last and, in fact, only become more beautiful with wear as slight fading and fraying edges adds to their charm.

 

The journey each of our beautiful items takes perfectly illustrates the love that is poured into them, from the design stage in Australia, to their production in India. Our garments are created with love by a group of extremely talented ladies in a small workshop in India, who are proud to be able to use the skills handed down to them through their families. The exquisite beading you see on each dress takes an entire day’s meticulous work. So you can rest assured our garments are truly one-off pieces, conceived and created with love, designed to be loved for decades to come.
